Souhegan River Canoe TrailA Trail for Paddlers SummaryThis twenty-five-mile paddle trail offers an unequalled view of the region. Traversing rapids (some seasonal) and stillwaters from Greenville to Merrimack, the trail covers most of the Souhegan's course. DescriptionThe Souhegan River is an invaluable resource for the region. From "Souhegan River Watershed Management Plan:" The Souhegan River is the pathway that connects communities, provides year round recreation to swim, fish, paddle, walk along, and enjoy scenic views. The river adds to the quality of life to both residents and visitors. Anglers, paddlers, and others enjoying recreational opportunities along the shores of the Souhegan and its tributaries contribute to the economy each year. The river flows through several town centers and provides scenic vistas, recreation, a sense of history, and access opportunities. More than just the defining feature of the region covered by this Web site, the Souhegan is itself a trail, not for hikers but for canoers and kayakers. The trail consists of three sections separated by two short unnavigable stretches (see maps): Navigability in other sections can vary with water flow. The best rapids invariably occur in early Spring. For more detailed information about rapids, current flow, and more, try the America Whitewater Web site.
