SummaryThis popular walking tour passes through scenic Wilton and the twenty-six-acre Frog Pond natural area frequented by mammals, water fowl, and daily walkers. In the winter, cross country skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobiles are common.
DescriptionYou can approach the area in two ways: from Maple St. or from Whiting Hill Rd. From the gate at 100 Maple St., enter the south-facing slope of a drumlin. Continue to a field that has been in constant agriculture production for nearly 200 years. The woodlot about the field contains many of the trees and wildflowers found in Southern New Hampshire. At the top of the hilled field is the Frog Pond. The man-made pond was constructed by a cut in a small esker to the north of the pond, diverting part of Tannery Brook into the dammed pond area. Continue West of the pond onto Whiting Hill Rd. to complete the loop. Alternatively, start at the Carnival Hill parking lot and head South on Whiting Hill Rd. Continue on the roads as shown on the map, or look for a small trail on the left. Follow the trail to ford a small stream and climb the steep esker to Frog Pond. Trail Map
