The Lower Falls on Purgatory Brook is one of the best known natural attractions in the Souhegan Valley. Did you know the falls are not protected from development? leas help us with your tax-deductable contribution. Any amount will bring us closer to closer to protecting the falls. To see pictures of the Falls, Purgatory Brook and the remains of the Falconer Mill click HERE. The Lower Falls is part of a house lot that may soon go on the market. The present owner has generously given the Souhegan Valley Land Trust an exclusive option to purchase until August 2008. We need to raise $65,000 to close the deal. The Good News: we are half way there! The Bad News: we have only 3 months left to raise the balance needed. As of May 1, 2008, we have just under $33,000 thanks to the SVLT Trustees, the Kaley Foundation and 82 private contributors. Together we can preserve this important local landmark. Your tax deductible contribution will protect the Falls for us and for future generations. If you have never been but would like to visit the Falls use GoogleMaps to find "Purgatory Road, Milford, NH". There is a small parking lot on the left off Purgatory Road just north of the Fitch's Corner. If you would like to be part of this important effort please send your tax deductible contribution for the "SVLT-Purgatory Lower Falls Project" to: SVLT, PO Box 417, Milford, NH 03055. If you have questions, or would like to actively assist in this special project, please contact Diane at: 603-672-6016 or Diane Fitzpatrick The Lower Falls on Purgatory Brook has been hard at work for settlers in the area for nearly 200 years. Starting in 1811, the falls supplied water power for a succession of lumber mill operators until the mill buildings were destroyed by fire in the 1950's. At that time the mill was owned and operated by William Falconer, a well known Milford surveyor. The Falconer Mill property, consisting of 5.5± acres, straddles Purgatory Brook in south-east Lyndeborough. The property includes a right-of-way from Purgatory Road beginning where the parking lot is today. The present owner, a descendent of Bill Falconer, has generously offered the property for sale to the Souhegan Valley Land Trust. The purchase of this strategically located land will provide access to the Lower Falls, the old mill site and the 3 mile Purgatory Brook Trail. The trail follows this geologically fascinating brook, rambling through more then 500 acres of protected land ending at the Upper Falls. The land trust was incorporated in 1970 for the purpose of buying the Upper Falls, which it did in 1972. Today the Lower Falls is still 'hard at work' enriching our lives. Together we can buy this magnificent place and protect it forever. Your contribution, in any amount, will move us closer to our goal of raising $65,000. A check made out to SVLT and mailed to the Souhegan Valley Land Trust at PO Box 417, Milford, NH 03055 will be gratefully accepted. The trustees will be offering guided walks to the mill site in the spring. Hikes to the Upper Falls are also being planned. Once on our donor list you will receive invitations to all events planned around this special project. The present trustees are thrilled to be able to assist in the protection of the Lower Falls, a perfect location for an SVLT project.
